How to Use Signal

Getting Started

To download Signal use the link here. Platform specific installation instructions are available:

Note that in order to create a new Signal account you must have a phone number (landline is fine) and you must start by installing the Signal mobile application on iOS or Android before you can use Signal on a computer.

If you do not own a smartphone or tablet, contact Satya and he can assist you with a workaround.

Once you have installed Signal on a mobile device, follow these steps to register:

  1. Accept the Terms & Privacy Policy.
  2. Enter and confirm your phone number.
  3. Tap Continue (on Android) or Next (on iOS).
  4. Tap "OK" to confirm your phone number.
  5. Wait for the SMS verification code to arrive. If you can not receive SMS, then after the timer finishes counting down, tap “Call me” to receive an automatic phone call.
  6. Enter the verification code.
  7. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up your account.

You will have a Signal PIN number. This can help you transfer your Signal account to a new device, but is not essential—don't worry if you lose it.

To join the Williams Lodge group, inform a member of the phone number you used to create your account so that they can add you, or ask them to share the group link.

The Lodge Group

The Signal group has a bridge bot which makes it easy to send short messages from the group to Lodge members who are not a part of the group. If you enter the @ button in the Signal app, you are able to choose one of the members to mention. If you mention the relay bot named “Charles the Machine” your messages will be automatically texted and emailed to those Lodge members on its list.
